LWVPGC Issues Forum Helped Protect Residents from Potential Danger
The residents in Oxon Hill, Southlawn, Livingston Woods, Indian Head and Fort Washington, along with the League of Women Voters of Prince George's County (LWVPGC), scored a tremendous victory in a more than two-year battle with PEPCO over a proposed but dangerous lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Station/BESS in their historically Black, multi-ethnic, multicultural middle-class neighborhood. In 2022, LWVPGC President Gloria Johnson met and engaged PGCC-TV Producers Marshall Johnson and Miriam Machado-Luces to present its candidates' forum virtually as livestreams. The eight Candidates Forums were well received and PGC voters got a great virtual view of where each candidate stood ahead of local elections.
President Johnson took another step forward by presenting an issue in District 8 of Prince George's County where PEPCO was planning to house BESS in a location less than 200 feet from a daycare center, 35 feet from a residence and not far from several schools, businesses and residential homes. If a fire broke out, water would not put it out, and toxic emissions would result in the evacuation of residents around a five-mile radius.
PEPCO officials announced at the most recent Prince George's County Council meeting that they have shelved the proposal and will locate the BESS on the Eastern Shore, Maryland.
