Prince George's County Council Passes Virtual Voting Bill

On September 26, 2023, the Prince George's County Council re-voted on CR-078-2023. The bill addressed allowing virtual voting by members of the County Council; which had been in operation during the pandemic. The vote previously failed on September 12, 2023. After a well publicized public out cry, the matter was placed on the calendar for a re-vote of the County Council as a "Committee of the Whole." On Tuesday, September 26, the Council voted again and it passed.

Many voters communicated this was a womens' issue or a maternal health issue. One Internet poster contacted LWVPGC President Gloria Johnson stating she believed it was a reproductive health issue or a political ploy to protect an individual female with an alleged high risk pregnancy. President Johnson made it clear that LWVPGC considers virtual voting as a matter of accessibility. LWVPGC is concerned with the long term impact of the law, as it relates to accessibility for disabilities as well as pregnancy related matters.

President Johnson stated the League of Women Voters (LWV) is a non-partisan political organization of women and men that encourages informed and active participation in government. The organization works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy. LWVPGC is  compliant with LWV positions in the areas of voting rights and accessibility for disabilities.

LWVPGC Issues Forum Helped Protect Residents from Potential Danger

The residents in Oxon Hill, Southlawn, Livingston Woods, Indian Head and Fort Washington, along with the League of Women Voters of Prince George's County (LWVPGC), scored a tremendous victory in a more than two-year battle with PEPCO over a proposed but dangerous lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Station/BESS in their historically Black, multi-ethnic, multicultural middle-class neighborhood.
